Influencia de las plantas sobre los ciclos materiales (agua, nutrientes, sales, carbono) en ecosistemas terrestres. Impacto de los cambios de vegetación (forestación de pastizales, desmonte y cultivo en bosques, deterioro por sobrepastoreo) sobre el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas, su interacción con el sistema hidrológico, y su prestación de servicios. Secuestro biológico de carbono. Biogeografía de ecosistemas terrestres. Diseño de sistemas productivos. Las aproximaciones y metodologías incluyen: Observaciones hidrológicas, determinaciones físicas y químicas en suelos y sedimentos, mediciones ecofisiológicas en plantas, caracterización física de la superficie terrestre con sensores remotos, modelos de simulación, abundancia natural de isótopos estables, entre otros.
